the philosophy of Communism, might prove to be a fallacious one. If
Communism is mistaken in its idea that class conflict is inevitable
and if Communist zealots are not successful in fomenting an aggressive
and crusading spirit among the population of those areas that they
influence or control, then war between the United States and Russia
might not arise. This situation may well develop. If material pro-
ductivity increases substantially throughout the world as a result of
industrial and scientific progress, it might prove possible so to in-
crease the material well-being of the proletariat that it would not
carry its opposition to the property owning class to the extreme extent
of destroying it. In other words, it might be possible to prove to
the proletariat the undesirability of killing the goose that lays the
golden egg.
It should be noted in passing that Communism clearly recog-
nizes this "danger" to the achievement of world revolution and therefore
preaches that the function of trade unionism, for example, is not
simply to get as much as it can for the worker within a capitalist
society, but rather to intentionally make his demands so great that
they will necessitate the destruction of that society. One might well
raise the question whether the demands of certain elements of labor
at the present of coftain Communist philosophy
