Dear Mr. President
Your letter of 12 August 1946, concerning the United States
position in respect to Korea, has been received and read with
interest.
The War Department will do its utmost to assist in the
attainment of the United States objectives in the Far East, in-
cluding the establishment of a free and independent Korean govern-
ment and will be guided by the views expressed in your letter.
Your support in providing this assistance, including obtain-
ing adequate funds and properly qualified personnel, is much
appreciated.
