SUGGESTED REPLY TO QUESTIONS IN PRESS CONFERENCE AT WHITE HOUSE CONCERNING U. S. POLICY TOWARD ITALY I am happy to have this opportunity of reaffirming U.S. policy toward Italy as it has developed since the Armistice under the wise leadership of President Roosevelt. On Octo- ber 13, 1943, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and Marshal Stalin took note of the Italian Government's declaration of war on Germany and accepted the Italian nation as a cobelligerent in the war against Germany. Our policy toward Italy has since been based on that relationship, keep- ing pace with Italy's democratic orientation and active par- - ticipation in the war. The United States is fully conscious of Italy's contri - bution, as a cobelligerent, to the common cause. We are con- vinced that she can similarly contribute, as she takes her place in the community of peace-loving nations, to the main- tenance of future peace. We shall therefore continue to do what we can to encourage her political and economic rehabili- tation. ARCHIVES RECORDS SERVICE and
