My dear Mr. President:
The information that you have accepted my resig-
nation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
to the Kingdom of the Netherlands has duly reached me.
I am deeply appreciative of the sentiments you have
expressed concerning my services to our country, both
here and in Portugal, and express the hope that the
letter you have addressed to me, and signed by you, will
in due course reach me, as I will of course value it
highly. I understand, Sir, that my resignation is to
become effective at some time after my arrival in the
United States.
I take this occasion to renew my thanks to you, Sir,
for the opportunity you have given to me to be of service
to our country and for the confidence you have always
