C O P Y American Embassy The Hague, Netherlands April 6, 1950 My dear Mr. Secretary: Although we will, of course, report officially on the repercussions following the termination of the Defense meetings, I thought you might be interested to know that I have heard nothing but the highest praise for the orderly and speedy despatch of business conducted by the American delegation, and particularly of the masterful way in which you presided over the final meeting. Especially effective, according to my Dutch friends, were your individual inter- views with the various Defense Ministers which they believe cleared much of the way for a successful conclusion. I hope you had a pleasant trip home, and note that you completely and satisfactorily disposed of the Shinwell-Strachey misunderstanding. With warmest personal regards. Yours sincerely, /s/ Alden Chapin The Honorable Louis Johnson Secretary of Defense Washington, D. C.
