DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12065, Sec. 3-402 State Dept. Guidelines, March 6, 1982 DEPARTMENT OF STATE By Dc NLT, Date 18-21-85 WASHINGTON August 22, 1952 CONFIDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Subject: Informal Visit of the Prime Minister of Norway to the United States The Prime 'Minister of Norway, Mr. Oscar Torp, plans to visit the United States next month, and his proposed itinerary provides that he visit Washington, arriving September 22 and departing September 28. The purpose of the visit appears to be simply to give Mr. Torp the opportunity to re-acquaint himself with the American scene, which he observed briefly in 1949 when he visited the United States as a member of the Norwegian delegation to the deliberations which preceded the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. You will remember that Mr. Torp's predecessor, Mr. Gerhardsen, visited the United States in May 1951, and that you entertained Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardsen at luncheon. Mr. Gerhardsen resigned the Premiership in November 1951 for "personal reasons" and Mr. Torp, also a leading figure in the Norwegian Labor Party, succeeded him. Present prospects are that the Labor Party will remain in power for some time, and Mr. Torp will there- fore very likely be Prime Minister for some years to come. Mr. Torp's visit is considered to be an excellent oppor- tunity to further strengthen Mr. Torp's friendly feelings toward HARRY S. TRUMAN LIBRARY CONFIDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION
