-2- April 7 Marshal Stalin replied to these messages. In his reply to the President Stalin virtually ignored the contents of the President's message and gave a very distorted version of the position of the British and American Governments as basis for charging that we were departing from the Yalta decision. In his reply to Prime Minister Churchill, Marshal Stalin did, however, indicate that he would use his influence with Lublin in order to have Mikolajczyk accepted. As you know, a joint message from you and the Prime Minister was presented to Stalin on April 18 and we are now awaiting Stalin's reaction. Stalin told Ambassador Harriman that the presence of Molotov in Washington would afford a good opportunity to continue the Polish discussions since all three Foreign Secretaries would be here and in addition Ambassadors Harriman and Clark Kerr. In the meantime, Harriman was informed by the Soviet Foreign Office just before he left Moscow that the Soviets contemplated signing with the Warsaw Government a mutual assistance treaty similar to those concluded with the Czechs and the Yugoslavs. We have pointed out to the Russians the desirability of delaying the signing of this treaty until the Warsaw Government has been reorganized in accordance with the Yalta decision, but the arrival last night in Moscow of the principal officials of the Warsaw Government makes it appear to our Charge in Moscow that the signature may take place in the immediate future.
