"THE FLAMING, APPEALING WORDS OF THE GREAT BANNER-BEARER OF PEACE": The
Communist radios are prompt and effusive in their praise of the "merciless logic,
the "convincing argumentation, the "clear and simple language, and the inspiring
effect of the interview. They vehemently and voluminously declare that Stalin
completely disproved the "poisonous and slanderous propaganda" concerning Soviet
preparations for war and that his statements are a symbol of peace equal in force
to the Stockholm Appeal. In general they do not discuss the substance of the re-
marks nor touch upon any of the implications of the interview, but proclaim again
and again, in the words of Bucharest, that "the bright answers of Comrade Stalin
are a most important contribution to the defense of the cause of peace, an ardent
call to struggle for the defense of our happy future against the American-British
imperialists, mankind's deadly enemies." These broadcasts are devoted rather to
glorification of Stalin and the peace campaign than to discussion of the contro-
versial issues.
Berlin, however, is more down-to-earth. After conventional references to the
"military budgets" of Britain and America, it elaborates Stalin's discussion of
Anglo-American officers and soldiers into a delineation of the widespread American
opposition to the Government's militarism. Gerhart Eisler contends that the inter-
view is a warning to those who listen to the warmongers' claims "that remilitariza-
tion is necessary" and that the Soviet Union wants war; these credulous persons
"should especially take to heart Stalin's words that war will become inevitable if
the warmongers succeed in misleading and deceiving the masses." He urges all
Germans to "immediately get to know Stalin's interview" SO that it will counteract
the lies of the warmongers.
Moscow radio is building an elaborate propaganda campaign on the PRAVDA inter-
view. Having broadcast the statements some 115 times on 16 and 17 February it re-
broadcasts them on 18 February, ostensibly to correct the sensational and untrue
reports in the bourgeois press. It follows this with grandiose accounts of the
manner in which the "flaming, appealing words of the great banner-bearer of peace,
Comrade Stalin, are proudly circling the terrestrial globe, calling forth an ardent
response in the hearts of those to whom the future of humanity is dear." The world-
wide emotional response to the interview is reported and recapitulated in numerous
transmissions, all of which stress the people's realization that Stalin is their
teacher and leader in the cause of peace.
