    "ocrText": "IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nJANUARY 21, 1952\nThe President has today sent the following letter to the\nHonorable Stanton Griffis, accepting his resignation as American Am-\nbassador to Spain:\nDear Mr. Griffis:\nIt is with reluctance that I accept your resignation\nas American Ambassador to Spain, effective on a date to be\nestablished later.\nIn again accepting your resignation from a position\nof high responsibility, I realize how generously you have\ngiven of your time and that you have responded on one occa-\nsion after another to the call of public service. I am sym-\npathetic with your desire to return to private life and there-\nfore accede to your wishes.\nThroughout all your assignments you have represented\nthe United States with great effectiveness and I want to thank\nyou for all you have done. I particularly appreciate the out-\nstanding contribution you have made, most recently, as Ameri-\ncan Ambassador to Spain.\nWith every good wish for your welfare and happiness,\nVery sincerely yours,\nHARRY S. TRUMAN\nAND\nFollowing is the text of Ambassador Griffis' letter to the\nPresident:\nAmerican Embassy,\nMadrid, Spain,\nDecember 17, 1951.\nDear Mr. President:\nThe beginning of the New Year will, I hope, mark\nthree milestones in my life: First, the end of ten years of\nalmost uninterrupted service in government; second, my near\napproach to my sixty-fifth birthday; and third, if you will\npermit, my retirement as United States Ambassador to Spain.\nIt is difficult to end my long and happy connec-\ntion with the Department of State under two great friends and\ndistinguished secretaries: General Marshall and Dean Acheson,\nand, I must add, with countless other faithful and unselfish\nservants of the Department. It is impossible to feel that I\nam severing connections with you.\nYou have honored me with four important ambassadorial\nposts, i.e., Poland, Egypt, Argentina, and finally, Spain. You\nhave given me every possible aid, comfort, and cooperation. You\nhave and will have always my deep admiration and respect, and my\ngreat personal affection. Yet, after ten years in government,\nthe call back to private life is very strong, and I have much to\ndo in the years to come.\nThis letter, therefore, signifies my resignation as\nyour Ambassador to Spain to take effect at your earliest con-\nvenience."
