MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Informal visit of the Prime
Minister of Sweden to the
United States
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Tage Erlander, has announced
that he plans to visit the United States in April in connection with
ceremonies at Rockford, Illinois.
Mr. Erlander is young, open-minded and able. He has steadily
grown in stature and power. Prospects are that he will remain in
office for many years to come. He has never visited the United States
and would undoubtedly be receptive to favorable impressions which
would permanently affect his attitude toward this country. It would,
therefore, seem desirable from the standpoint of foreign policy to
take advantage of his trip to the United States to suggest that he
might visit Washington informally. Such a visit would involve you
in a minimum of obligations, probably only a brief talk with him at
your convenience.
The week of April 13 is the most convenient time for Mr. Erlander
to be in Washington. If this week is inconvenient for you, he could
with some difficulty rearrange his schedule and be in Washington
April 7 - 12.
I recommend that Mr. Erlander be invited for informal discussions
during the week of April 13, if possible. Subject to your concurrence,
the Department will make the necessary arrangements.
