CONFIDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION 1 BRIEFING PAPER Biographical Sketch - Prime Minister Tage Erlander ARCHIVES TRUMAN "NATIONAL AND LIGHT RECORDS ADMIN." The Prime Minister is 50 years old and has been in Swedish politics as a Social Democrat since the age of 30. Most of that time he was a member of the Parliament (Riksdag) or held Cabinet positions concerned with social welfare and education. Upon the death of the well-known Per Albin Hansson in October 1946, Mr. Erlander was chosen, somewhat unexpectedly, as a compromise candidate to succeed him as chairman of the Party and head of the Social Democratic Government, positions which he still holds. He is representative of the younger, less doctrinaire group of Swedish Social Democrats. A man of integrity of mind and purpose, he is considered receptive and still in the period of growth. Although modest and inclined toward shyness, Mr. Erlander is an easy conversationalist, friendly and earnest. He has grown steadily in stature and strength in his own party and with the Swedish public; he probably will continue in power for many years to come. As the Social Democrats have only a bare majority of votes in the Riksdag, they combined with the Agrarian Party last October to form a Labor-Farmer Government which commands a comfortable margin of support, but in which the Social Democrats continue dominant.
