NLT (PPF-5485)402 TOP SECRET MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT INONU OF TURKEY TO PRESIDENT TRUMAN "Our countries have common interests, the principal of which is to defend ourselves against threatened Soviet aggression. "My responsibility is to face a danger tomorrow when help may be a century away. We turks really must look that far ahead and must be able to hold up for a century. Turkey is like an oasis in the desert. We have no reliable friendly forces on any side - north, east, south or west. We need assurance now that we would not be abandoned should Turkey be attacked. We must have a means available to fight immediately. We hope not only for material assistance but moral support. "We feel that on every appropriate occasion, the U.S. should declare that Turkey will not be abandoned, then Turkey will feel itself doubly strong." DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12065, Sec. 3-402 State Dept. Guideline, June 12, 1979 By NLT- HL NARS, Date 10.13.41 TOP SECRET
