PORTRAITS of the PRESIDENTS гирмая LIBRAUY WHEN OF RECORDS The 0 SERVICE" OVERNATION OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE Collection Copyright 1949 by Guy Golterman The cover and entire contents of this book are fully pro- tected by copyrights issued in 1949 to Guy Golterman in the United States and in foreign countries and must not be reproduced in any manner without written per- mission. The Insignia and picture of the White House are not included in this copyright notice. Foreword "The Presidents of the United States" six simple words that have in them the vision of a nation sweeping from shore to shore of a continent, of a star-touched flag, and a mighty array of people within whom burns a deep and devoted fire of freedom. "The President of the United States" the title has belonged to men of aristocratic lineage, and to those who sprang from the humblest beginnings. They have been law- yers and farmers and soldiers, and they have held this most powerful of offices only be- cause their fellow citizens believed in them, trusted them, turned to them for leadership. Some of them looked the part of Chief Executive of a mighty nation, some were men of the most unassuming appearance. The likenesses of all have been preserved in the Official White House Portrait Collection, an inspiring art treasure that has been admired by thousands who have made the pilgrimage to Washington, D. C. This is the first publication of this govern- ment owned collection, in a form making it accessible to every American home. The original portraits were done by the flowering genius of the portrait painters of their day, at an estimated cost of $300,000. Publisher's Office 310 South Euclid Avenue St. Louis 10, Missouri -SEAL OF STATES THE STATES UNITED THE OF PRESIDENT THE COAT OF ARMS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES The Seal of the President of the United States is displayed wherever the Commander in Chief is present in his official capacity. In accordance with protocol, new presidential colors, to super- sede the four-star flag adopted in 1916, were re- quired after the Congress authorized five-star rank for Admirals of the Fleet and Generals of the Army. The flag was unfurled October 25, 1948. * * The Seal depicts the American Eagle holding in the dexter claw the olive branch of peace and, in the sinister talon, arrows for defense. Symbol- ism derived from the thirteen original states governs the number of olive leaves and berries, arrows, stars and cloud puffs. * The chief azure of the shield upon the breast of the American Eagle represents the Congress binding the colonies into an entity. A forty-eight star annulet rings the whole. The integrity and strength of the unified device are made explicit in the Latin motto on the scroll, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," or, "FROM MANY ONE." In accordance\nwith protocol, new presidential colors, to super-\nsede the four-star flag adopted in 1916, were re-\nquired after the Congress authorized five-star\nrank for Admirals of the Fleet and Generals of\nthe Army. The flag was unfurled October 25,\n1948.\n*\n*\nThe Seal depicts the American Eagle holding in\nthe dexter claw the olive branch of peace and,\nin the sinister talon, arrows for defense. Symbol-\nism derived from the thirteen original states\ngoverns the number of olive leaves and berries,\narrows, stars and cloud puffs.\n*\nThe chief azure of the shield upon the breast of\nthe American Eagle represents the Congress\nbinding the colonies into an entity. A forty-eight\nstar annulet rings the whole. The integrity and\nstrength of the unified device are made explicit\nin the Latin motto on the scroll, \"E PLURIBUS\nUNUM,\" or, \"FROM MANY ONE.\"\nPAINTING BY GILBERT stuart\nGEORGE WASHINGTON\nFIRST PRESIDENT\nFederalist.
