    "ocrText": "VAL-KILL COTTAGES\nHYDE PARK, DUTCHESS CO.\ns.\nNEW YORK\nTRUMAN\nJanuary 29, 1948\nU.S.\nSERVICE\"\nAMERIT\nGOVERNMENT\nDear Mr. President:\nI read Mr. Reston's article in the New York\nTimes the other day and I feel I want to\nwrite you on the question of Palestine and\nthe United Nations.\nIt seems to me that if the UN does not put\nthrough and enforce the partition and pro-\ntection of people in general in Palestine,\nwe are facing a very serious situation in\nwhich its position for the future is at\nstake.\nSince we led in the acceptance of the UN\nmajority report on Palestine, and since\nwe feel that the existence of the UN is\nessential to the preservation of peace,\nI think we should support a move on their\npart to create an international police\nforce, perhaps from among the smaller\nnations, We should stand ready at the\nrequest of the UN to remove our embargo\non arms and to provide such things as\nare essential to the control of the Arabs,\nnamely, modern implements of war such\nas tanks, airplanes, etc.\nIf we do not take some stand to strengthen\nthe UN organization at the present time,\nI shall not be surprised if Russia does,\nwhich will put us in a difficult position\nto say the least.\nGreat Britain's role, of course, is not\nonly to placate the Arabs, but probably to\narm them because she knows very well that\nonly the United States and Great Britain\nare going to buy Arab oil and she wants\nto be sure to hold her full share.\nIf the UN is going to be the instrument\nfor peace, now is the crucial time to\nstrengthen it.\nWith the deepest concern, I am,\nVery sincerely yours,\nTheran Prosuch"
