River on a planked railroad bridge, a foot bridge, a pontoon bridge and
in small craft. Two enemy columns of unknown size, with supporting
artillery, have arrived in the general areas east of Suwon (1074 - 1608
and 1021 - 1608) the night of 2 July(KT). According to FECOM as of
2100/02(KT), Suwon was still held by the South Koreans and FECOM
believed they could continue to hold it through the night. South Korean
elements of several divisions hold Suwon and the hill immediately to the

b. The 6th North Korean Division, reportedly consisting of
former Chinese Communist troops, is reported as advancing on Inchon
from Kimpo. (FECOM) (SECRET)
C. On 1 July, according to FECOM, the 8th South Korean Division
reportedly advanced northward from the general vicinity of Samchok, and
presumably attacked Kangnung.
ARMY
d. One provisional battalion of the U.S. 24th Infantry Division,
is
reported by FECOM as north of Taejon. As of 0500/02(EDT) they had
not established contact with the enemy. The battalion consists of head-
quarters, 2 reinforced rifle companies, 1 platoon of 4.2 mortars, 6 bazooka
teams and 2 platoons of 75-mm. recoilless rifles. (TOP SECRET)
e. The remainder of the 24th Division has begun its move to
Korea by air and water.
f. Units of the 25th Infantry Division will be redeployed to Kyushu
to garrison the stations vacated by the 24th Division. (TOP SECRET)
NAVY
g. A U.S. task group under Rear Admiral W.F. Boone is forming
on the west coast of the U.S. The group, which includes the light carrier
Philippine Sea, the heavy cruisers Helena and Toledo, and nine destroyers,
is scheduled to arrive in the Hawaiian area approximately 15 July. (ONI)
h. Commander Task Group 96.5 in the cruiser Juneau engaged
six NK MTB's at 020640KT, destroying five of them. The MTB's were
apparently returning from a mission of escorting ten ammunition barges
to Chumunjin. The ammunition presumably had been delivered prior to
the engagement. (SECRET) (FECOM)
