Since mid-morn- ing of the 8th, the 3d Battalion has not been in communication with the USAFIK Commander and is presumed, by FECOM, to be encircled. By 2310/08 (KT) the 1st Battalion was reported approximately 4 miles north of Kongju, with the enemy still in energetic pursuit. At 1500/08 (KT), Company A of the U.S. 78th Tank Bat- talion, an unidentified battery of 155-mm. howitzers, and a South Korean Engineer Battalion were in position at a previously mined bridge over the Kum River at Kongju, where the river is not fordable.
