G eneral MacArthur, in a cable to JCS at 0200/10(EDT), calls attention to the following: (1) the division now in action in Korea, "and the other two divisions soon to be committed," are at neither authorized peace nor war strength; (2) forces now available for combat must fight with each infantry regiment short one infantry battalion, with each field artillery battalion short one battery, with no divisional tank battalions, and no separate tank company for the infantry regiment; (3) urgency of situation requires the augmentation of existing FECOM units to full strength and their immediate reinforcement with com- pletely manned and equipped units from the United States. The 21st Infantry Regiment continues patrol action in the Chochiwon area without establishing contact with the enemy The regiment is supported by the 11th Field Artillery Battalion, less Battery A. (FECOM) (SECRET) U. S. Navy h. During the shore bombardment of the cliff road on the east coast at Imwon at 0810/00K by the HMS JAMAICA (CL) and USS SWENSON (DD729)g both ships were engaged by a battery of three 75 mm guns. JAMAICA was hit by one shell causing 12 casualties of which 4 were fatal. The material damage was slight® SWENSON sustained no casualties nor damage. JAMAICA was relieved by MANSFIELD (DD 728) and returned to Sasebo. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) i. South Korean Naval Intelligence report states that the shore battery engaging JAMAICA AND SWENSON at Imwon consisted of ten 120 mm guns. Ten shore guns and the Imwon fortress were reported destroyed. (FEAF) (TOP SECRET) j. On the west coast of Korea, BELFAST (Br. cruiser), CONSORT and COSSACK (Br. destroyers) relieved SHOALHAVEN (Aus. frigate) and 2 TOP SECRET
