SECRET U. S. AIR FORCE (contd) qo On 25 July USAF B-29's will attack communication facilities north of the bomb line to a general line from Taean to Samchok (D/I USAF) (TOP SECRET) 4. Enemy Capabilities a. Along the west coast the enemy has resumed his advance to the south capturing Kwangju, head of a primary highway net and railroad leading southwest approximately forty-five miles to the important seaport and naval base of Mokpo Concurrently, an armor supported enemy force of battalion strength has moved from Chonju toward Chinan, threatening an envelopment via Kochang-Taegu. Probably more than one division is echeloned along the Kunsan-Mokpo axis as the movement is proceeding boldly. Lightly armed ROK police forces can offer only dilatory resistance. Unless stopped by a main disruptive effort of the air force and the diversion of troops against this new enemy menace, the southwest corner of Korea will be lost, along with the natural defense line through Namwon-Sunchon Transversal roads lead directly into the Pusan area, and the enemy is on all of them (FECOM) (SECRET) b. Along the Taejon-Yongdong axis, enemy movements indicate that the enemy will resume the attack by encirclement and infiltration tactics. The spread of enemy activity indicates that more than one enemy division is carrying this assault. (FECOM) (SECRET) C. Enemy pressure is growing in the Sangju area where the enemy has sent an estimated force of two regiments to relieve one of their regiments encircled in that area. This may be a prelude to an attempt to penetrate between the U.S. 24th Regt and the ROK 1st division, which is being relieved. (FECOM) (SECRET) d. In the eastern sector, the 5th, 15th and 18th NK Divisions are reported posing a threat to Waegwan, Taegu, Yongchon and Pusan. (FECOM) (SECRET) e® Along the east coast, the enemy retains his capability of continu- ing his southward attack to interdict friendly use of Pohang and/or of sending flanking columns against friendly forces at Yongju, Andong and Uisong (FECOM) (SECRET) 4 Coordinated by Office of Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2g U.S. Army Extensions: 131-55245, 55766, 72591 SECRE
