his government that there is going to be a million dollar cut.
AL told BRAND that it was serious but that it is not final yet.
BRAND also wanted to know if the cut went through how it would
be apportioned to the various countries. AL said that he will
determine that when he has lost the fight.
PRICHARD confirmed that McKELLAR (Phon.) who is pretty
friendly is going to handle it in the Senate. AL stated that
McKELLAR and LEO are pretty good friends and they generally do
not give him much of a hearing. It will probably be a one day
affair but AL thinks that it will be all right. AL received a
letter from McKELLAR asking him what changes he wanted to make
in the House bill but he is holding up the answer until he sees
what the House does.
AL continued that LEO was relying on DIRKSEN (Phon.)
for information and this made both McCORMICK and RAYBURN mad
because DIRKSEN wanted a trip abroad and he could not get the
State Department or anyone else to sponsor it. AL thinks that
it was a good political move so he helped him. They got a solid
vote. The committee clerk said that he (DIRKSEN) was the only
fellow that was wide awake. PRICHARD asked if DIRKSEN is willing
to go to bat tomorrow and AL replied that both DIRKSEN and
WOODRUM (Phon.) are willing. PRICHARD will have the judge contact
WOODRUM tomorrow. AL stated that he thinks WOODRUM is all right
and that he will go along when he knows what it is about but that
he has not attended any meetings.
PRICHARD said that the whole thing has him worried. AL
stated that if something is not done about "this guy" there won't
be a lot of people around there. AL continued, "Incidentally,
OSCAR telling ELLISTON (Phon.) about this business, I was wonder-
ing what HARRY was up to. As a matter of fact HARRY is pretty
friendly with DEAN SO that corner is pretty well plugged." AL
mentioned that rumor has it that OSCAR is slated for something
in Justice but PRICHARD said he does not believe that there is
anything to it.
AL went to a farewell party for CHARLIE DENBY who re-
signed. AL said that he told DENBY to take a vacation as these
newspaper rumors may have some fire behind the smoke. AL mention-
ed that CLAY wants DENBY over in Germany. PRICHARD cautioned
AL not to drop any hints around and AL stated that he is not
dropping hints as to personalities but he is dropping hints that
there is fire behind these press releases. He said that he has
to do this to hold some of the good guys. AL said that he was
frightened by the story of DEAN and has not told anyone. PRICHARD
confirmed that AL will call LEO now.
9:55pm PRICHARD to FERG. (CHARLES L. FERGUSON, O.P.A.)
FERG stated that he tried to get PRICHARD this morning
as he told AL that he would contact him. PRICHARD advised that
