9:40pm CORCORAN to JOJO (a young girl) saying he understands she is
going to camp soon. He jokes with her about an accordion, and
asks if she is going to bring it with her. CORCORAN then asks
her to ask her DADDY or MOTHER what Senator HILL's new number
is. She inquires and then informs CORCORAN that it is EMERSON
3864. CORCORAN thanks her.
9:45pm CORCORAN to SENATOR HILL.
H--Have you finished your dinner, dear sir?
C--You saw me begin, and now I've just finished.
H--I saw you begin about 6 o'clock.
C--Well, Senator, I wanted to show you what a guy could do with
the present ration restrictions. Now you know why there
is a food shortage.
H--Folks that never got it before are getting it now.
C--That's the idea. (They joke about it.)
H--Say, Tommy, you've got guests there haven't you. I don't
want to disturb you.
C--Just my brother DAVE. You're not disturbing me.
H--Say, old fellow, I see JOHN SULLIVAN's going down there in
the Navy Department.
C--Well, that's one of the things I wanted to tell you about a
couple of weeks ago before you had to go to Alabama.
H--Why didn't you tell me?
C--Well, there wasn't time, and uh, but you know something else?
H--What's that?
C--That the price of it was that ARTEMUS GATES, MORGAN'S son-in-
law, becomes Under-Secretary of the Navy.
H--Well, that's what I knew.
C--Now you are going to have a Republican Under-Secretary, that's
GATES, and you're going to have a Republican Assistant
Secretary, that's HINSEL (Phonetic), and you're going to
get JOHNNY, who never was too strong on our side of the
fence, and who is KNOX's (Phon.) executor, in the fourth
place.
H--In the fourth place, uh-huh.
C--So you've got DILLON REID (Phon.), MORGAN & CO.; the CHASE
NATIONAL BANK, that's HINSEL (Phon.). and FRANK KNOX running
the Navy.
H--Well, listen, that isn't much improvement is it?
C--No.
H--JACK will be so damn far down the line, and he doesn't know
anything about it and all that sort of thing.
C--And he isn't fundamentally a smart guy.
H--Sure, he's not a fundamentally smart guy. He's a nice guy
