D--And that ABE is a CRUMP machine man in Tennessee with a
strong anti-Negro prejudice.
C--There is nothing to be done about such a story. Were they
calling you for corroboration?
D--Yes, they say AP has it too.
C--I think ABE should call PM tonight. Doesn't he know CAROL
KILPATRICK?
D--He is with Chicago Sun now. I think they are gunning for
the Power Division and if they can get ABE, TEX will be
next. It is all tied up with the fight on distribution of
the
C--I think it is part of the campaign against ICKES.
D--HUGHO is out of town.
C--I think ABE should call PM, AP and UP and deny it.
D--Something is breaking over there, Tom. EDGERT (Phon.) says
it is MIKE STRAUSS (Phon.) trying to "get" ABE because
MIKE is in with the reclamation people who are anti-power.
TOM (EDGERT) is over there in the power division.
VIRGINIA tells CORCORAN that she wanted him to get word to BEN
and to find out what is going on over in the Interior Department.
9:37pm CORCORAN to MR. JOSH LEE.
C--On our friend ARNOLD, now while I am trading this out with
him, he is short of funds and he's applying for $3000.
I thought you might call JOE O'CONNELL in the morning and
tell him that you were still talking to HARRY and you did
not know what your ultimate asking would be but that this
fellow had this application in to draw the $3000 and that
you hoped he'd let him have it. Now, I passed the message
to JOE and a dozen other -- Did FOLKES (Phon.) get you
today from PEPPER's office.
L--Yes, and I
C--That's what he was calling about.
L--I've got a call in for him.
C--Well, that's what he was calling about. I didn't want to
call your office, SO I called through FOLKES. And we
couldn't get JOE -- all I want to tell you is the appli-
cation is in. JOE knows about it
L--Should I contact JOE or HARRY WHITE?
C--Well, I don't think you have to - well you could contact
HARRY WHITE but you might want to trade later. I am not
sure completely, JOSH, that I can't make this through the
STATE DEPARTMENT without going down on you too hard, and
I'd like in the meanwhile to stall this along. So he's
asked for $3000 and just tell JOE or HARRY, whichever one
you think it talks easiest to get us in, but all I want
to do would be all that you're asking for, get it?
L--I see, u.h, huh. I get it.
