Washington, D. C.
June 22, 1945
3:28pm Judge JOHN BURNS, from Boston, to CORCORAN. CORCORAN said
he had tried to get BURNS yesterday because he wanted to tell
him that "we" managed to work out so we got a good break on this
LEVER (Phon.) thing and "we're" going to take another crack at
it. CORCORAN said that MILTON EISENHOWER is a friend of "ours"
and when BURNS asked where EISENHOWER comes in CORCORAN said that
EISENHOWER is going to reorganize the War Foods Administration;
that he's the guy that's going to appoint the committee. CORCORAN
said that EISENHOWER is also a great friend of OLMSTEAD. BURNS
said, "Did you talk to the old man?" CORCORAN said that he
(CORCORAN) thought he'd leave it up to BURNS to talk to the old
man; that he thought BURNS would want to do it. CORCORAN said
that MONTY is up at Lake Maury (Phon.) in Vermont. BURNS said he
would call the old man. CORCORAN then asked if BURNS had been
able to get CORCORAN a house in Thalma, Mass., to which BURNS
replied that he thought he would have some news for CORCORAN.
CORCORAN then asked if BURNS knows the draft board in Thalma
(Phon.), Mass. that CORCORAN'S brother has a man in Brazil named
MEREDITH HOUGH and that the draft board in Thalma has suddenly
taken a notion to draft HOUGH; that HOUGH is almost 30 years
old and that by the time they could get him back from Brazil he
would be over 30. CORCORAN said that he wants HOUGH deferred
until he is overage. BURNS said he thinks he knows the chairman
of the board and he'll see what he can do. BURNS then asked,
"Is MORGANTHAU going to get it?" To which CORCORAN replied that
he didn't know. BURNS said, "JOE told me that HANNEGAN said
they're looking for a high-class Jew to put in the cabinet before
they can give him the bums rush." CORCORAN said, "I suppose they
have to put one in, haven't they?" BURNS said, "The trouble is
that trying to get a high-class Jew is no easy job." CORCORAN
said, "Maybe that's why they're keeping ROSENMAN on. Maybe if
they can keep ROSENMAN on they wouldn't have to get one. "
3:45pm
CORCORAN to MR. SILLETTE (Phon.). CORCORAN said that he has
confidence now to go on "knowing I'm not going to find any
elephant traps under me." He asked SILLETTE if he knew JOHN
CARTER VINCENT and SILLETTE replied that he did. CORCORAN asked,
"Would you be willing to tell JOHN CARTER VINCENT what you told
me?" SILLETTE said he would do so. CORCORAN said he might
ask him to do it but wants to talk to him privately and alone
before he (CORCORAN) goes any further on this thing.
3:50pm
CORCORAN to MISS LIBEL, in Judge VINSON'S office at White House.
He asked where BEN COHEN is and was told that COHEN is in New
York at the Winthrop. CORCORAN then talked to PRICHARD as fol-
