OCR Page 1 of 3CO SUMMARY
Washington, D. C.
July 4, 1945
8:21 PM BEN COHEN asks PEGGY CORCORAN the address of Congressman LYNDON JOHNSON,
with whom he was supposed to have dinner at 7:30 P.M. PEGGY tells him
the address is 4921 - 30th Place, N. W. BEN says he will take a taxi
there immediately. PEGGY tells him TOM would like to speak to him but
BEN says he is so late for dinner that he will call TOM later unless it
is urgent. OK.
8:23 PM
PEGGY CORCORAN leaves message at LYNDON JOHNSON residence that BEN COHEN
is on his way and will be there soon.
9:01 PM
PEGGY CORCORAN to KATIE (phonetic), who said she worked today as usual.
They talk about Fourth of July celebrations and the fireworks tonight.
They refer to VIRGINIA who has gone up to Nantucket and KATIE said she
hadn't talked to JIM. KATIE does not know when she was going up to
Nantucket and they talk about her employer who so far has said nothing
about her going. KATIE said that her employer said today, "Sit down
Miss OLEY (phonetic) and she thought he was going to talk about it but
he merely said, "Send a letter to TOM and send a letter to JIM ROWE
(phonetic) and --11 and telling her things to do. PEGGY said, "Does JIM
ROWE write to him?" KATIE: "Yeah." PEGGY: "I didn't know he knew him,
did you?" KATIE: "JIM ROWE? knew FORRESTAL?" PEGGY: "I didn't know
he knew him very well." KATIE: "Well, you know, he was over at the White
House with him." PEGGY said that she had lunch with SOPHIE today and took
TILLIE with her and that this afternoon they played golf with DAVE CORCORAN,
who came this afternoon, and who is sitting on the porch with TOM debating
whether they should take MARGARET to the fireworks tonight. She discusses
child guidance problems involving MARGARET. They discuss the effect of
drinking every night and the problems of caring for children, especially
with MOLLY away on vacation. They refer at length again to KATIE's
employer not bringing up an unspecified subject, and KATIE says that if
he doesn't bring it up in a day or so she will have to bring it up herself.
KATIE mentions that no one in the office knows anything about this and
PEGGY is the only one she has spoken to about it. KATIE asks if BEN has
been given his job yet. PEGGY doesn't think so and won't for a while.
PEGGY thinks NELSON ROCKEFELLER will go, but KATIE thinks his wealth will
be a factor. They also talk about ARCHIBALD McLEISH, who PEGGY thinks
will be out. PEGGY tells KATIE that TOM was telling DAVE that DAVE could
be Senator from Rhode Island so easily but that TOM couldn't. TOM also
said he would like to own a house in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. KATIE
said that she thinks either one of them could be Senator from Rhode Island.
PEGGY: "I think TOM got too much bad publicity." She continued that TOM
thinks so, too, and that periodically he talks about what he has done and
hasn't done and what other people have gotten and he hasn't got. She said
that these moods have persisted for 4 or 5 days every month or so. She
described his discouragement at his lack of success and relates various
jobs he turned down such as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. They discuss
JOHN SULLIVAN who has just been appointed to this position. PEGGY said
SULLIVAN got ahead by ingratiating himself rather than by working like TOM
has done. They discuss "HOWIE" (phonetic) who is apparently overseas.
