WORTH CLARK to Judge STEVENS (ME 1048) that he tried to call CHASE but he
was in San Francisco. STEVENS says no hurry because the bill can't be
acted upon as the Senate and House are in recess. WORTH says yeah.
STEVENS says he is sending CLARK a letter on it, and that CLARK can give
it to CHASE when he gets back. O.K.

MR. HOBSON to CORCORAN, that "JOHN" (SONNETT ?) called and HOBSON had a
chance to talk to him and put in a plug for "JOE". HOBSON said he asked
him if he was considering JOE for General Counsel and that a lot of his
friends would be pleased to see JOE get it, one of the friends being
BILL DOUGLAS. CORCORAN thanks HOBSON for the plug.

CORCORAN to JOHN SERVICE.
C - Now you don't go before that Grand Jury.
S - Do not, huh.
C - That's right, definitely.
S - Jesus,
C - Everybody agrees.
S - That sounds awful bad.
C - What?
S - Repeats.
C - Sounds good.
S - Good, huh?
C - Sure.
S - Well, the way HITCHCOCK talked, there wasn't much chance of clearing
myself unless I made an appearance as Exhibit A.
C - Well, listen, don't do anything until you, talk with me. And the
orders are (laughs) not to agree. to go before that jury until you
hear further from me.
S - O.K.
C - All right, goodbye.

CHARLES MERKESON to CORCORAN.
M - Hear anything?
C - No, I had a long talk with him last night. I talked with you after
that, didn't I?
M - No.
C - Well, we sat down for nearly an hour.
M - You and our mutual friend.
C - Yeah, your manager. (Senator CLAUDE PEPPER ?)
M - Yeah, that's right.
C - He had been over, he had kept the date with GEORGE's (SMATHERS ?)
superior. That guy swore he would have the other number one in his
office this morning and really give it to him so damn hard and really
jolt him out of the possibility of doing anything about your enemies.
Now, our boy friend had been over, had done that job, so I very
carefully put another call in this morning to remind him of the possible
date of Thursday and when I got that slug in, I left it, but we had a
