C--Abe. I think you'd better call the Secretary right away and tell him
that HI JOHNSON is dead.
F--Oh, really.
C--Because, you know, he is SO close to them that he might have to come
back. And his having to come back might change strategies a great deal.
F--Yeah.
C--The news is just out and I think you'd better get it to him right
away.

F--Tom, I got a call from a very good friend in San Francisco. BART
(CAVANAUGH) CRUM is in the race for this over here (Interior?).
C--He will probably be in the race for this other thing now (Senator
Johnson's post?)
F--Yeah, but I don't know, I doubt that. Hannegan telephoned him and
said not to deny it too hard for it might come true. The CIO crowd
out there is for him, that is to say, they are for ICKES first, then for
him and he says if it is offered to him and if he decides to take it,
he will do it only on the condition that TEX and I stay. Which is--I just
throw that in that's the C.I.O. guys campaign. It won't make any
difference in my personal strategy.

C--I think you had better go down and see LES (BIFFLE) right away.
HI JOHNSON is dead. HANNEGAN is pressing for this job in order to have
another Jewish member of the Cabinet. BARTLEY CRUM of San Francisco,
a Jewish liberal lawyer who was WILKIE'S campaign manager. Remember.
Now this JOHNSON thing may divert him into trying for the Senate. But
he and HANNEGAN have a kind of a deal on in which Hannegan told him on
the telephone not to deny, to have his name thrown in, and then not to
deny it hard, because they would work it out. See, he has the fact that
