CO SUMMARY
8:20 AM
TOM CORCORAN to Senator whom he addresses as BOB (LaFOLLETTE?).
TC - BOB? TOM.
B - Yes, TOM.
TC
- This is LEO's (CROWLEY) last day. Unless something happens. All
I'm wondering is, before we start this day, do you know any more
than I know? You haven't signed anything since you had your talk
with LEO after you had the meeting on the hill?
B - Well, I know that he had dinner with (JAMES) BYRNES. That's all I
know.
TC - That's right. All right.
8:25 AM
TOM CORCORAN to LISTER HILL, Senator. CORCORAN said there was nothing
for LISTER to do about it but "that (DWIGHT) PALMER thing came unstuck
again" LISTER said, "Oh, good God CORCORAN said he didn't understand
how it could happen except that all promotions had been frozen "before
they could get this one through." CORCORAN said he told (ROBERT) LOVETT
and told (General) PERSONS about it and they may get it through. CORCORAN
then said, "All that I was worrying about was GEORGE KILLIOM. Do you know
anything?" LISTER replied, "No, I don't, TOMMY. After you talked to me
here the other morning I called REBER (SAMUEL REBER, Department of State?)
(phonetic) and he told me he'd get me a report on it as soon as he could,
but I haven't heard anything further from him. But I'll push him up. You
know, you just have to keep naggin' tem all the time to get anything done
down there. I'll call him again today, TOMMY, and see if I can't get
something on that." CORCORAN said, "You know why I'd like to take care
of him." LISTER said, "Oh, I know why you'd like to take care of him. I
know where he's sitting in everything. I understand that. Till see if
I can get a report on that today. CORCORAN stated "That's going to have
a lot of significance for this reason. You see, this fellow is the substi-
tute. He's got a million dollars for the Congressional campaign and it
makes a hell of a lot of difference to us
(?)
who gets it. He's
good. You haven't heard anything about JIMMY DOWD (phonetic) have you?"
LISTER said he had not except this, "I told BERT PERSONS what you told
me. He said, 'Well, I'm sure that's all right. 111 CORCORAN said, "Now
the other thing I want to tell you. On this Saturday Evening Post story,
I'm gonna send down to you the report of that committee--the other two
stories. This first story is written to catch that law suit which is coming
up on November 1st (?). The other two stories--the guy really got
scared--so he alternates between kicking you and kicking me and giving me
the most fulsome, lavish praise. But this first one is written for that
law suit. Now, there's only one thing I'm interested in. I've got the--
he led this thing right straight up to the committee report and then
didn't put the committee report in. The committee report was wonderful.
Now, I want to send you down & a couple of it. If you hear talk, I wish you'd
just underline the damned thing. LISTER said he would do so.
