11:23 AM TOM CORCORAN to LOWELL MELLETT (continued) TC - There's a third one out. LM - TOM, I don't think there would be a damned bit of nourishment in it. THURMAN (ARNOLD?) has been talking about it and said if he had the time to do it he thought he'd sue on his own, but instead of that he's going to write them a letter if he can g et time to do that. TC - Well, but what good will writing a letter do? LM - Nothing. Just make him feel better, I suppose. TC - Now this is what I'm thinking about. I suspect that Mr. (TOM) STOKES will open up again on top of these articles. LM - Yeah. TC - And my statute of limitations is kinda running on STOKES. Do you think--I'm talking very frankly now--that it would at least have the effect of stopping some more of it if I filed, even though I couldn't actually recover damages. I.M - That very readily might have that effect, if--stopping not only STOKES, but others who just toss it in casually when they're thinking about you in some other connection. It might very well have that. I don't know how much you would get out of a libel suit, and as for any actual damage it is doing you, you know better than I do whether it is. The two I read, of course, were all rehashes. I didn't find anything new being added, and all obviously full of feeling--intentionally, feeling has been thrown into it, and, in other words, the bias is pretty clear on through so that the average reader who reads very far in it--I don't believe anybody who fails to find anything new will read very long. I think the effect on the average reader is, "What the hell, this is old stuff" and it still indicates--some people. probably still regard it as pretty good advertising for TOM G. CORCORAN. Quite seriously, OM--just a matter of business They continue this discussion and agree it would be well to bring suit, possibly in New York. 12:05 PM TOM CORCORAN to secretary of WILL CLAYTON, State Department. CORCORAN said, "Mr. CLAYTON's secretary? (Answer was yes) I have a message to give him (CLAYTON) which I was asked not to give over the telephone concerning Mr. JOSEPH RAVENSKY (phonetic), a friend of his in New York. I have just come back from New York. Could I have three seconds? That's all it takes me today. The secretary said CLAYTON is at a meeting out of the building, may be back in about one-half hour. He is leaving by plane for New York City at 1:30 PM. CORCORAN asked, "May I just ride down with him to the plane? I can fit my time." The secretary will call TOM as soon as CLAYTON returns. CORCORAN said, "I think it's something he wants to hear." 12:20 PM TOM CORCORAN to DONALD RUSSELL, State Department, saying he had talked with "his nibs" (LEO CROWLEY) out in Chicago. CORCORAN then said, "He told me that he was very pleased about that and to tell you that he thought that not only would it please him but if it pleased you it would also
