CO SUMMARY
10:20 AM
TOM CORCORAN to LEO CROWLEY in Chicago. TOM says, "I just wanted to
report to you. I did what you told me about (WILL) CLAYTON and he was
very enthusiastic and said he would take care of it right away. I also
got to DONALD (RUSSELL) who said he would take care of it right away.
Then I got ahold of JOHN SNYDER who I understand was doing something
about aggregating possibilities and talked to him about the (CHARLES)
FISHER thing after I had talked to DONALD. JOHN did not seem to know
anything about it. I do not think he is having anything to do about it
but he said he is for it. You know he is very close to FISHER." LEO
said that was all good. LEO will be in Tuesday morning." (Re Export-
Import Bank)
10:25 AM
TOM CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIOM at the National Democratic Committee who
said he just returned this morning. TOM said, "I arranged with BILL
(DOUGLAS) that you and I will go out early tonight and sit down this thing
of our joint enterprise--which our joint-enterprise is you. BILL's
dinner is at 7 PM today and TOM will pick GEORGE up at the latter's
hotel at 5:30 PM and they can talk "before this damned drinking begins"
and people get woogie. GEORGE says he does not drink anyway. (Chair-
manship of RFC for KILLIOM?)
10:27 AM
TOM CORCORAN to Senator BURTON WHEELER. TOM said he tried three times
to contact FORRESTAL yesterday without success. TOM said that he under-
stood that JOHN (he obviously meant ED, who is WHEELER's son) reports
on Monday on a 3-day a week schedule. WHEELER said the admiral told him
he would let ED off three days a week to take "care of his work and so
on. I said to him frankly I would prefer as far as I am concerned to
have the thing over because the people are going to be watching him and
criticizing each move he makes. He said, 'Well, he will not have to
stay in more than two or three months'. I said, 'Well, after all, the
thing is over and if the thing is over and if they could let it die
down but if they keep it going- - II. TOM said, "I will see JIM
(FORRESTAL) tomorrow." Senator WHEELER and CORCORAN then had the fol-
lowing conversation:
BW - Say, TOM?
TC - Yes.
BW - Our friend HANNEGAN. My God. I -
TC - Yes.
BW - I do not know what to think of that fellow, really. He sent a
postmaster up to Butte that I told him I was going to object to.
But he appointed him anyway--di.d not have to send him up here (?)
so then they turned around and appointed him as acting postmaster.
TC - Well, that is just as bad from your point of view.
BW - Just as bad sure but I swear that I do not understand the fellow.
It looks to me as if he is definitely out to play with the crowd
which is out to get me, etc.
