1. Situation in Brief:
a. On 25 November, as the Eighth Army offensive gathered
momentum, enemy reaction was practically nonexistent, except in the
1st ROK Division zone where an estimated enemy battalion supported by
artillery and mortars or rockets launched 2 counterattacks southeast of
Taechon, causing a battalion of the 11th ROK Regiment to fall back approx-
imately 1 mile. Meanwhile, other U.S. I and IX Corps units continued to
advance against little or no opposition: the 24th U.S. Infantry Division
drove 5 miles to within a mile of Chongju, the 25th U.S. Infantry Division
registered a 5 mile gain to within 3 miles of Unsan, and the 2d U.S. Infantry
Division advanced 4 miles to the vicinity of Woncham® In the ROK II Corps
zone, the 7th and 8th ROK Divisions encountered moderate resistance from
hostile units up to 2 companies in size during an advance of approximately
4 miles. The Capitol ROK Division, continuing to advance along the east
coast, by-passed Nanam, and reached positions within 2 miles of the out-
skirts of Chongjin. Heavy snow and roadblocks continued to impede the
advance of the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment on the west side of the Changjin
Reservoir, while on the east bank the 5th U.S. Marine Regiment was pre-
paring for relief by elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division. The 26th
ROK Regiment routed 2 CCF companies near Incho. ST. PAUL, ENGLISH,
and SPERRY supported the Capitol ROK Division on the east coast with
gunfire support. Planes from Task Force 77 continued to strike against
border targets. Naval air flew 177 sorties on 24 November, and U.N.
aircraft under FEAF control flew 496 effective sorties, including 209 com-
bat, FEAF Bomber Command dispatched 45 B-29's Fifteen of these
attacked the Yalu River bridges at Manpojin and Chongsongjin with excellent
results. (FECOM)(SECRET)
b. On 26 November, increasing hostile resistance and counteraction
to the U.S. Eighth Army offensive was indicated by sharp, well-coordinated
counterattacks, which caused some minor local withdrawals. On the left,
the 24th U.S. Infantry Division captured Chongju without resistance, while
the 1st ROK Division regained previously lost positions southeast of Tae-
chon. With effective air and artillery bombardment, the 11th ROK Regiment
contained a counterattack by 2 enemy battalions northeast of Taechon.
Task Force Dolvin of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division, was unable to advance
