Situation in Brief: The 1st U.S. Marine Division and elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division, isolated in Changjin, launched an attack southward in an effort to reach other surrounded friendly units in Koto. The 17th U.S. RCT (-) ar- rived in the Hamhung area and the 26th ROK Regiment (-) arrived in Pung- san. The 1st ROK Cavalry Regiment departed by motor from Songjin, while the remainder of the Capitol ROK Division was evacuated from Song- jin by LST's. The Chinese Communist Forces occupied Pyongyang and its 2 airfields, and crossed the Taedong and Nam Rivers, moving toward the U.S. Eighth Army positions astride the highways ,to Seoul. Hostile contact increased as elements of the 5th U.S. Infantry RCT reported a probing attack by an estimated company east of Yul. Other 24th U.S. Infantry Divi- sion units were engaged in clearing the MSR near Sachang where an enemy group of unknown strength had blocked the highway for one mile. ROK ele- ments reported 2 engagements northeast of Singye. The 2d ROK Division, attacking northeast toward Chorwon, killed approximately 1,000 enemy, while the 5th ROK Division attacking northeast toward Hwachon encountered stubborn resistance from an estimated enemy division. Task Force 77 and Carrier Task Group 96.8 attacked enemy troops, supplies, and military installations with success. ST. PAUL fired one mission. Naval air flew 279 sorties on 5 December, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 738 effective sorties, including 383 combat, 251 transport, and 54 fighter control. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Clear first part of period, overcast with scattered low clouds spreading slowly along the west coast from the Kimpo Area in morning hours. Visibility good during daylight hours, except in snow showers, but restricted in haze during night. Forecast: Weak cold front to pass thru north Korea between 0001 and 0600/07 (KT) with multilayer clouds and snow showers. Rapid clearing behind cold front, except along northeast coastal area from Yuki to Wonsan where low overcast with snow showers will persist.
