The President SECRET Washington, D.C. 8 December 1950 1 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 151 (maps attached) From 0700/07 (EST) to 0700/08 (EST) From 2100/07 (Korea) to 2100/08 (Korea) 1. Situation in Brief: Hostile resistance continued moderate to heavy until noon on 7 December against the 1st U.S. Marine Division withdrawing southward along the Changjin-Hamhung corridor. Because of intense, close air sup- port which dispersed the enemy into small groups, opposition weakened considerably during the afternoon and night, as the rear guard of the 5th U.S. Marine Regiment closed in Koto by midnight. Task Force D, attacking north, encountered a hostile group north of Sudong and at last report had advanced to within 6 miles of the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment, moving south from Koto. The enemy has established a strong roadblock between these 2 friendly forces and continues to reinforce this strong point from the west. Air reported that a tank-led enemy force of approximately 1,500 troops was following closely the 3d ROK Division withdrawing from Kilchu. Hostile activity along the U.S. I Corps' immediate front remained negli- gible. In the U.S. IX Corps sector, an enemy company forced the withdrawal of reconnaissance elements of the 6th ROK Division near Ungu. Two prob- ing attacks, launched by approximately 2 enemy companies each, were re- pulsed by other IX Corps elements near Yul and Sachang. An estimated enemy regiment caused the withdrawal of a ROK battalion in the Kuhwa area northeast of Kaesong, while an estimated 2 enemy companies repulsed ROK patrols slightly north of Kaesong. On 7 December, naval aircraft flew a total of 507 sorties, with the carrier-based aircraft concentrating on enemy troops and installations with telling effect in close support of friendly forces. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 485 effective sorties, including 264 combat, 166 transport, 51 fighter control, and 4 reconnaissance, (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Scattered clouds in extreme north and northwest, with broken to overcast middle clouds in central Korea, and overcast low clouds with mod- erate to heavy snow along the coastal areas. Visibility 1 to 3 miles in smoke and haze near cities and less than 1 mile in snow along the east coast; otherwise visibility was over 5 miles. Forecast: Some improvement in central and northern areas during the night with high and middle clouds increasing from the northwest in the early morning.
