JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 153
(maps attached)
From 0700/11 (EST) to 0700/12 (EST)

From 2100/11 (Korea) to 2100/12 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
The rear guard of the 1st U.S. Marine Division broke contact with
the enemy and passed thru elements of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division which
was covering the withdrawal. The last of the Marine troops with elements
of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division attached closed in Hamhung prior to 2400/11
(KT). The 1st U.S. Marine Division began embarkation at Hungnam, and
the 7th U.S. Infantry Division began the reorganization of elements of the 31st
and 32d U.S. RCT's which were previously attached to the Marines. In the
U.S. Eighth Army sector, enemy forces, strongly entrenched on command-
ing terrain, impeded the withdrawal of the ROK II Corps along the Tosan-
Yonchon highway during 11 December. Despite this enemy action, elements
of the 3d and 5th Regiments of the 7th ROK Division arrived in Yonchon,
while the remainder of Division was preparing to move to the town. Elements
of the 10th Regiment of the 8th ROK Division closed in Yonchon with the re-
mainder of the Division enroute. North Korean troops, using the former
enemy defense positions along the 38th parallel, restricted the northward
advance of elements of the 5th ROK Division near Chichon. The 25th U.S.
Infantry Division established and improved defense positions along the east
bank of the Yesong River from Yonsan north to Chamsong, while the 1st
ROK Division maintained positions northeast from Chamsong to Tosan. On
11 December, Naval air flew a total of 295 sorties, with carrier aircraft
continuing their attacks on enemy troops, supplies and military installations
with good results. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 506 effective
sorties, including 145 transport, 11 reconnaissance, and 350 combat, of
which 75 were by U.S. Marine aircraft and 4 by SAAF aircraft. (FECOM)
