Washington, D.C.

JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 154
1
(maps attached)
From 0700/12 (EST) to 0700/13 (EST)
From 2100/12 (Korea) to 2100/13 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
Increased hostile activity opposite the 5th ROK Division north of
Chunchon resulted in stepped-up air attacks, especially against enemy ele-
ments utilizing pre-war defense positions along the 38th parallel. Gains
of the 5th ROK Division were limited to 1,000 to 2,000 yards during 12 Decem-
ber, because of the moderate to stubborn resistance from an estimated enemy
regiment. Near Yongpyong, 3 patrols of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division were
forced to withdraw by enemy units varying in size up to company strength.
The 25th U.S. Infantry Division and the 1st ROK Division, maintaining de-
fense positions on the Army left flank, each reported 1 minor skirmish.
The only hostile encounter in the U.S. X Corps sector consisted of an attack
at 0720/13 (KT) by an estimated enemy battalion, which was launched by
40 to 80 CCF troops dressed in U.S. parkas, against elements of the 7th
U.S. Infantry Division 6 miles west of Oro. The enemy withdrew at 1050.
The 7th U.S. Marine Regiment completed outloading at Hungnam, while the
remainder of the 1st U.S. Marine Division continued to embark. Other X
Corps units, except those currently reorganizing or embarking at Hungnam,
maintained a perimeter defense around the Hamhung-Hungnam area. Task
Force 77 and CTG 96.8 planes continued to attack enemy ground troops and
military installations with good results. Surface ships conducted fire mis-
sions on the east coast, shelling a truck convoy. Naval air flew 429 sorties
on 12 December, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew a total of 651
sorties, including 165 transport, 39 fighter control, 19 reconnaissance, and
428 combat. (FECOM)(SECRET)
2. Weather:
Mostly overcast conditions improving in south Korea after midnight
and improving in north Korea after 0600/13 (KT). Central Korea remained
generally overcast throughout the period. Visibility was generally good with
some restriction in haze and smoke in the valleys. Temperature varied
between 350 F and 550 F with colder temperatures occurring in the mountains.
Forecast: A frontal passage during the period is anticipated generally to
improve cloud conditions throughout Korea particularly in the west. Visi-
bility will be generally restricted in haze and smoke in the valleys. (FEAF)
