y MLT.
a. In the Hamhung area, enemy groups varying in size up to bat-
talion strength made repeated probing attacks on the 7th U.S. Infantry Regi-
ment outpost line of resistance west of Hamhung during the morning of 15
December. Enemy pressure increased in intensity, causing forward elements
of the regiment to withdraw approximately 4,000 yards to previously pre-
pared positions. Early on 16 December, an undetermined number of the
enemy made slight penetrations of the 65th U.S. RCT positions 2 miles north
of Hamhung; a later attack in the same vicinity was repulsed and 50 CCF
prisoners were captured. Outloading of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division for
water movement to Pusan continues. In the U.S. Eighth Army area, no enemy
contact was made in the U.S. I Corps sector on 15-16 December. The 1st
U.S. Cavalry Division, continuing under Eighth Army control, began to move
to the Kapyong area with the mission of blocking a possible enemy penetra-
tion from the north or northeast, At 1200/15 (KT), elements of the 6th ROK
Division contacted about 500 enemy troops who were later subjected to air
attack with good results. Early in the morning of 15 December, the 32d
ROK Regiment, yielded some ground during an enemy attack of undetermined
strength, but the lost ground was regained later in the day. The adjacent
36th ROK Regiment, in position 8 miles northwest of Chunchon, withdrew
approximately 4,000 yards under enemy attack on 15 December. The 17th
ROK Regiment, while moving into positions approximately 9 miles northwest
of Kapyong during the afternoon of 15 December, engaged an enemy force
estimated at 1,000, killing 120 and driving the remainder of the enemy 3 miles
to the north. During the night 14-15 December, friendly air observed 775
vehicles in enemy rear areas, of which 429 were southbound. Naval air,
although hampered by weather, flew a total of 285 sorties. LIND and BORIE,
on northern patrol, shelled railroad targets along the east coast. On 15
December, U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 705 sorties. (FECOM)

b. On 17 December, the U.S. X Corps continued to contract its
perimeter in phased withdrawal as the embarkation proceeded. The main
line of resistance is now located as an arc on a radius of approximately 5
miles from Hungnam, with Yonpo airfield included within the perimeter. The
Capitol ROK Division and the 31st U.S. RCT (-) completed outloading and
are enroute to Samchok and Pusan respectively. The enemy build-up north
and west of Hungnam continues. Early on 16 December, a small enemy group
engaged elements of the 15th U.S. Infantry Regiment in a three hour fire fight
8 miles west of Hungnam, and an undetermined number of the enemy made a
strong attack on 32d U.S. Infantry Regiment positions 4 miles northwest of
