Weather: The period began clear and operational, but on the second day be came nonoperational, with rain and heavy overcast over the entire area. On the third day of the period, it cleared somewhat along the west coast and was marginal with broken overcast in the northwest area. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Heavy fighting occurred in the IX US Corps sector of the front. In the CHORWON area, the enemy successfully repulsed UN attacks on HILL 391, northeast of CHORWON. On the last day of the period, the enemy launched a company-strength attack against UN outpost positions south of HILL 391. The attack was repulsed. Also, on the last day of the period, the enemy launched five probing attacks, two of which were of company strength, against UN outpost positions on FINGER RIDGE in the Capitol ROK Division sector, about four miles southeast of KUMSONG. All attacks were repulsed, but the enemy remained in the area. Hostile mortar and artillery fire during the period totalled approximately 56g 000 rounds, of which about 35, 000 fell in the IX US Corps sector. During the week, a total of 123, 000 rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire fell across the front, including about 60, 000 in the IX US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic during the period totalled 12, 020, of which 8, 396 were south- bound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: UN forces in the west-central sector (IX US Corps sector) continued to place pressure on the enemy forces at HILL 391, northeast of CHORWON, and at TRIANGLE HILL and SNIPER RIDGE, north and northeast of KUMHWA, respectively. On the first day of the period, the enemy counterattacked UN positions at TRIANGLE HILL (HILL 598) with a force of two battalions, The attack advanced to within 300 yards of the crest
