October 17, 1945 Dear J.C.: I was glad to have your letter of the ninth, which apparently had been mailed in Panama - also glad you have the points to get out but I was hoping you would be on the ship when I visited it in New York Harbor. I'll be dis- appointed at not getting to see you, although I know just how you feel about getting home. I appreciated very highly your letter and your comments on my conduct as President. It is quite a job and requires a lot of thought and study but decisions have to be made, just as in any other job or any other business, and it is up to me to make them, whether they are right or wrong. If they are wrong we try to correct them and if they are right nothing is said about them. It is just like a man beating his wife - if he treats her all right nobody says anything about it, but if he blacks her eye the whole neighborhood talks about it. I hope you have a chance to come by Washington and see me on your way home. Sincerely yours, John C. Truman S 1/c U.S.S. Missouri "N" Division c/o Fleet Post Office New York, New York
