of ARCHIVES AND REOPROS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE RADIO AUDIENCE: 5.25 Tixe United States Senate yesterday passed the bill, which I introduced to prohibit the operation of motor vehicles in interstate commerce by unlicensed drivers. This bill calls for the passage by the several States of uniform laws governing the issuance of drivers' licenses. It does not set up any new federal enforcement bureau nor create a Federal license law. It does autho Migs the Attorney General to make regulations for its enforcement by local author- 1 ities. It requires driver, who State lines to have a driver's license issued only after the driver has demonstrated his ability and his right to operate a motor vehicle. His ability to drive is proven by his passing a physical examination, meeting with the minimum age requirement, and cooperate with providing suitable identification. The purpose is those States which require safe driving and to encourage those States which have not yet enacted strict legislation governing drivers to do so. The necessity of some standard system of licensing automobile drivers throughout the country is all too apparent.
