FOR RELEASE ON DELIVERY
Members of the Karyland Motor Truck Association:
I suppose everyone here knows that this ia the day of appeasement.
Greet nations, and sone not ao great, ask to be appessed. Some States in our
oun country went their share of appeasement. Veny industries asen to be
clamoring for appeasement. Just now the majority of all American industry 18
anziously looking for some fora of tax appeasement. Appeasement acems to be
in the air.
It is therefore perfectly naturel that our good friends, the railroad
manegers and executives, should be asking for their share of appeasement, too.
They have written their ideas into e Bill which recently hes been introduced
in the House, and is now before Congress. Other transportation bills have been
introdueed, end still others probably will 56. These will enne et en early
date for consideration before the Benate Committee of which I an a member,
I am not en appeaser. In considering transportation legislation I want
to assure you gentlemen that I personally shall not attempt to appease any form
of transportation at the expense of any competitive form of transportation. In
other words, I shall not atteapt or even consider a policy of appessement for
the railroads, if that policy works to the disadventage of the trucke and buses,
the waterways and the airlines, which are the railroad's competitors. Nor shall
I attempt to appease the trucka and buses-walthough from what I hear, you
gentlemen have not decided on details of an appeasement poliey as yet--at the
expense of other forms of transportation.
I heve heard that the trucking industry is sonewhat alarmed by the influx
