REAL ESTATE BOARD, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI,
ON DECEMBER 31, 1943 AT 12:00 0'CLOCK NOON.

I an honored to be invited here today to take part in this
luncheon meeting of the Kansas City Real Estate Board. Such organizations
as yours have played an important role in the building and development
of our great nation. The importance of the work of the real estate boards
throughout the country will be reemphasized and actively demonstrated in
the post-war period, when all our resources - our material wealth, our
scientific skill and ingenuity, our educational institutions, our moral
unity and religious faith - must be mobilized in order to bring us through
the transition period from war to peace and insure a decent political and
economic order for future generations. It is a difficult and complex
future we are facing, but I do not hesitate to voice this belief: it will
be a good future if we have the wisdom and courage to make it 80.
The Special Senate Committee Investigating the National Defense
Program, of which I am chairman, has interested itself in the various
housing problems confronting our people during war-time. We have reported our
findings concerning certain phases of defense housing. We will continue to
investigate the use of the billions of dollars appropriated for housing.
It would not be a constructive contribution to recite the statistics
of Government housing in the war effort to you. As real estate dealers
you are aware that there has been fraud and waste and inefficiency in the
