OCR Page 1 of 6When we look about us today we see a world of misery and
woe, we read of the death and destruction, we see sorrow and grief,
everywhere rampant. With this in mind, we might be inclined at
first thought, to hesitate before arranging celebrations of this
character. But we can turn to a historic precedent in paying
homage to the Patron Saint of Ireland, during these trying times.
Our first Commander-in-Chief, General George Washington, during
the darkest days of the Revolution, realizing the mighty contribution
of the sons of Erin, in that desperate struggle, set aside the 17th
of March as a day of celebration for the Irish. Tonight, we can
turn this celebration into a dedication, - we can dedicate this 17th
of March to the service of our beloved Republic; to the principles
for which our forbears gave their all -- invincible principles which
have stood the test of time.
The civilization of the world has felt the impact of the
FRUMAN
sons and daughters of Ireland, who left the homeland to take up
