TRUMAN: Fellow workers in the Democratic Party there are two
championships at stake within the next few weeks.
One is being decided in my native state right now.
And I don't care who wins that one, so long as it's a
St. Louis team.
The other championship will be decided on November 7 and
neither you nor I cares who wins this one, so long as it
is the Democratic Party.
Last night I hard a good citizen make a very good point
on the radio. The citizen is our National Committee
Chairman, Bob Hannegan, and the point he made is worth
repeating. Bob said that if the vote were taken in the
home right now our next President would be Franklin Delano
Roosevelt. Every national poll, wi thout exception, shows
this, and of course it is true.
But there is something else that is equally true. Votes
are not counted in the home. They are counted at the
voting booth.
This places a tremendous responsibility on us as Democrats.
Here we have the people of this country delivering what
amounts to a mandate. They have demonstrated through the
polls a distinct preference for a Democratic administration.
They know they need it in order to win this war as quickly
as possible and in order to secure the peace that will foll
