Dolivored in Seattle, October 19th.
Mr. Chairman, ladics and gontlomen, it is alwnys a pleasure to como to
the Pacific Northwest. On this visit it is perticularly so, becauso I am
affordod an opportunity to toll you of the vory high regard which wo in the
Sonate have for Scnator Mon Wallgren, one of my closest and most valued friends.
Senator Wollgron served with me on the Truman Senato Committee. Hc was
Chairman of sovoral of our most important sub-committocs, including particular-
ly those on aircraft and on light metols. Wc always found him a towor of
strongth, and his advice and counscl wore a major contribution to the work
of the Truman Scnate Committee and to the winning of the war.
With Scnator Wallgron Governor Woshington State is in safo hands.
Horc in the Pacific Northwost you have bc. n closo to the monaco of the
Japonese from recoss the Pacific. You remembor the torrible days whon the
Japs wero invading Alnsko and when it was fcared that they might como horo.
Your fom of invasion is gonc now, b'ecaus € your sons are fighting and
boating the Japs end because you at homo worked hard to produce the plancs
and ships and other war mr torinls which were requirod.
Miracles of production wore necompli shod thot confounded our cncmics
cbrond and our critics at home. Those critics included the Republicon
condidato for Prosident.
A non of little 6th and no experience in such mattors.
He scoffod at tho Prosident's program to build 50,000 plancs for our dcfonso.
Ho said it could not be donc in less than four years.
But Portunatcly Fronklin D. Roosevolt is Prosident. Hc went to work
to got those pirplanos, and with your holp ho got thom. Ho kncw that the
obstacles wore great, but he tacklod them and one by one they wore overcomc.
Todny wo ore producing plones at the rate of about 100,000 a ycar. Twico
the numbor the Republionn candidntc said was impossible.
The samo rosult wns obtained in producing all other war matcrial, and
todny our fighting men have whr t they need to win the war, and they are
doing just that.
Much romoins to be donc before the final victory can be achicved, but
we know beyond a shadow of doubt that it will be achieved. with the right
S
kind of leader ship - the kind the t wo have now - wo con win quickly. with
a
the wrong kind of lendership, it could take years longer.
