IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DECEMBER 5, 1945
The President has addressed the following letter to
Honorable Herbert E. Gaston, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury,
accepting his resignation:
"Dear Mr. Gaston:
In accepting your letter of resignation as
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, submitted to me
in connection with your appointment as a Director of
the Export-Import Bank of Washington, I wish to com-
mend you sincerely for your outstanding service in
the office you are relinquishing. I have every con-
fidence that your record of public service will gain
added lustre in your new assignment, the importance
of which I need not emphasize further than to say
that upon the success or failure of your efforts

depends in no small measure the future peace and
security of the world.

HARRY S. TRUMAN"
Following is the text of Assistant Secretary Gaston's
letter to the President:
"My dear Mr. President:
Inasmuch as you have done me the honor to
appoint me with the advice and consent of the Senate
to be a director of the Export-Import Bank of
Washington I submit my resignation as Assistant
Secretary of the Treasury to be effective upon my
taking the oath of office in my new position.
In relinquishing my work in the Treasury
I desire to express again my great appreciation of
the privilege and honor of being permitted to serve
in your administration, in the Treasury Department
as well as in the work I am about to undertake.
