IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 15, 1948
The President has sent the following letter to the Honorable
Richard Parkhurst of the United States Maritime Commission:
April 14, 1948
Dear Mr. Parkhurst:
I regret exceedingly to learn that impelling personal
reasons dictate your determination to return to private life.
Reluctantly, therefore, I acquiesce in your desire not to be
reappointed as a member of the United States Maritime Commission
at the expiration of your present term on April 16, 1948.
You have justified abundantly the confidence which I
reposed in your ability and integrity when I pressed you into
the public service in January, 1946 to complete the unexpired
term of Admiral Vickery.
Although I cannot ask you to continue in your post
at personal sacrifice I do wish to embrace this opportunity of
assuring you of my heartfelt appreciation of the high and dis-
interested quality of the service which you have given. I
know that the progress and well-being of the United States
Merchant Marine are very close to your heart and I shall want
to feel free to call upon you from time to time for helpful
counsel.

Following is the text of a letter from Commissioner Parkhurst
to the President:
January 5, 1948
The Honorable
The President of the United States
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
My term of office as a Republican member of the United
States Maritime Commission, to which you appointed me in January
1946, to complete the late Admiral Vickery's unexpired term,
expires on April 16, 1948, some three months from now.
As I shall not be a candidate for reappointment, I want
to inform you of my decision well ahead of my actual termination
date in order that you will have plenty of time to consider the
selection of a successor for the vacancy. In the interim, I shall,
of course, be at my post and continue to give my best efforts to
the work of the Commission.
I have been honored to serve in your Administration
and it is only because of impelling personal reasons that I
have felt it necessary to make the decision to leave.
You may be assured of my continued interest in and
concern for the United States Merchant Marine, whose well-being
I regard as of cardinal importance to our country.
