May 28, 1948
The following exchange of letters and announcement of
the resignation of the Hon. Prentice Cooper as United States
Ambassador to Peru, MUST BE HELD IN CONFIDENCE UNTIL RELEASED.
Release is automatic at 12:00 o'clock Noon, Eastern Standard
Time, today, Friday, May 28, 1948.
NOTE: Simultaneous announcement of the resignation
of Mr. Cooper is being made in Peru.

The President has sent the following letter to the
Hon. Prentice Cooper, accepting his resignation as Ambassador to
Peru:
May 28, 1948
My dear Mr. Cooper:
I have received your letter of April
NARA
thirteenth, in which you tender your resignation
as Ambassador to Peru, effective at a date to be
established later.
In accepting your resignation, I wish to
convey my appreciation of your service to the United
States Government during the two years you have
been in Peru.
I extend my best wishes for your future
happiness and welfare.

HARRY S. TRUMAN
Following is the text of Mr. Cooper's letter of resigna-
tion:
April 13, 1948
My dear Mr. President:
I hereby tender my resignation as United
States Ambassador to Peru, effective July 15.
When you nominated me to this post, I intended
to be absent from my home a year. It is now two years
that I have been away and I feel that my work in Peru
has been completed.
I greatly appreciate the opportunity you gave
me to serve in this capacity.
