1985 3 EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT BUREAU OF THE BUDGET WASHINGTON 25, D. C. NOV 30 1945 My dear Mr. Latta: On November 27, 1945, you advised this office that H. R. 2642, "For the relief of Mrs. Evelyn Johnson", had been received at the White House, and requested reports and recommendations as to the approval of the bill. It is the purpose of the bill to pay the sum of $5,000 to Mrs. Evelyn Johnson of Chipley, Georgia, widow of A. C. Johnson, deceased, in settlement of her claims against the United States by reason of the death of A. C. Johnson who was killed when the automobile which he was driving was involved in a collision with an Army truck-trailer near La Grange, Georgia, on or about January 24, 1945. It appears that, on the date in question, an Army truck with a trailer attached operated by an enlisted man on official business was proceeding north on one of the main highways near La Grange, Georgia; that at the same time a car owned by A. W. Johnson and operated by his son A. C. John- son, was proceeding in the opposite direction on the same highway; that at a point about ten miles south of La Grange there is a bridge on the highway known as the "Troup Factory Bridge" which is 17 feet and 10 inches wide and 244 feet long; that the civilian vehicle entered the bridge and had proceeded approximately two-thirds of the way across it when the Army vehicle entered thereon; that after the Army vehicle had proceeded about 25 or 30 feet on the bridge, the left side of the truck crashed into and sideswiped the left side of the civilian car. As a result of the collision, the civilian car was damaged beyond economical repair, and A. C. Johnson sustained injuries from which he died the following day. He was twenty years of age at the time of his death, and left surviving his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, who was also twenty years of age. He was employed as a clerk at a salary of $32.50 per week. The War Department has paid to Mrs. Johnson an amount of $802.50, representing medical, hospital and burial expenses incurred as a result of the injuries and death of her husband. FRUMAR NARA
