Iran Update
Today's Objectives
We will be waiting to see what views the PLO
will have on a scenario for a solution and whether
Waldheim has a chance of engaging in a solution.
Beyond that, our objectives are:
-- To move for an informal UNSC consensus
against the trials.
To stimulate Islamic reps in New York to
petition against trials and for the release of
hostages, building on the twin themes of Islamic law
and traditions on the inviolability of diplomats and
companions during the holy month of Mcharram.
-- To evaluate more fully the threat of espionage
trials of hostages, and the attitude of Khomeini and
the Revolutionary Council toward them.
-- To assist any released hostages and facilitate
their return to the U.S. following stopover in
Frankfurt.
Pending Initiatives
-- We have contacted the PLO, asking them to work
against trials.
-- A message has been sent to all diplomatic
posts calling attention and urging public and private
support against trials (Tab 1)
