    "ocrText": "Interview with Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr.\n8\nknow I can tell you just what occurred. During the early\nsummer of '62, my family and I were invited by the Attorney\nGeneral and Mrs. Kennedy to come up to Hyannis Port,\nMassachusetts, to be their guests over a weekend. We went\nand had a wonderful time. On one of the days, we had\nfinished water-skiing and swimming, and were on the fantail\nof the Honey Fitz, the Kennedy yacht. The President brought\nup the subject of our \"Life\" contract and what did I think\nof this, and what did I think of the fact that they had\nrefused this?\nSo I went into some of the details of why we had had the\ncontract to begin with and what the contract actually con-\nsisted of, which was generally misunderstood at that time,\nand still is, as far as that goes. But we went into some\ndetail of how the contract did not cover experiences from\nthe space flight, that the contract covered permitting the\n\"Life\" people to talk to our families, our children, and\nus--in other words, it gave them access to our homes. How\ndo these people live and what was their childhood background?\nWhat do they think? What do they do when they go to church?\nWhat do they do when they play with the kids? What do they\ndo when they go to the swimming pool? In other words, the\nlittle personal day-to-day family life and activity was the\nonly thing that was for sale on this contract and that's\nthe only thing that has remained for sale on this. It's\njust been the personal background story, not the story of\nthe flight. Well, he hadn't understood this in this vein\nat all and I explained this very carefully, and that that\nwas the only thing that was for sale--that I was as much\nas anyone against selling what we were actually doing on\nthe flights themselves, and if anyone could show me anywhere\nwe ever held back one iota of information that we gained on\na flight to give to any particular person, I'd like to know\nabout it. That information has been open to everyone on\njust as full a measure as it has been to \"Life.\" I'd be\nhappy to give back any money I had received if anyone could\nshow me where I had withheld anything from other press\nconferences or interviews. We had just drained every bit\nof information that we could and given it to everyone,\nanyone that asked for it."
