Re: Shooting of Lee Harvey Osvald
Sir:
I had been available to Captain Fritz's office most of the morning
of November 24, 1963. I was in this office shortly berore 11:00am.
Seeing that preparations vere under way to nove Osvald out of the
building, I stepped across the hall to the Burglary an Theft Office
and instructed the men who were standing by to report to the jail
office tvo at a time. These men were instructed to assist in any
manner needed.
About 11:00am, the party in Captain Frits's office started moving
out. I was the first out of the offices walking to the hall door
leading to the jail elevator. I unlocked this door and admitted
Captain Frits, Detective Leavelle, Graves, and Montogomery, and the
prisoner Osvald. Oawald was hanouffed to Detective Leavelle.
when the elevator was loaded, I was the last person to enter the ole-
vator. When we reached the basement, I was the first peirson off.
A-
bout the time ve got off the elevator, Captain Frits was behind ne,
and he told ne I would have to ride in the second car because ve could
only get five in the first gar which contained the prisoner. He no-
tioned for me to lead out. Ve vent out the door on the Eust side of
the jail desk.
whin I walked out into the driveway, I found that presa photographers
and news media vere surrounding the ares. strong flood lights vere
focused in the direction of the jail office. They vere blinding.
These lights vere located at the Northeast corner of the ares of the
opening leading from the jail office.
The vehiole in which the prisoner was to be loaded vas attempting to
back into the opening in front of the jail office where unruley pri-
soners are generally unloaded. I immediately aoved forvard toward the
east side and on the south edge of this crovd, moving the orowd of
photographers and nevamen backward. These people were bloeking the
vehicle's novement, being in betveen the vehicle an. the prisoner. I
had both arms out stretehed and vas able to contain these people in a
fairly wide area. I vas faeing sast with my back to the prisener. To
my left 1 sould see that everything vas clear nearly to the flood lighte.
There was about two officers to ay left along the drive way. Hovever,
the neva media vere standing about three deep.
