A unique method for permanent disposal of radioactive wastes
vas tested successfully. Wastes mixed vith concrete are pumped into
underground shale under pressure. This causes cracks in the shale,
thus creating storaga space.
At one of our atomic energy installations a facility dasigned
to reduce the volume of highly radicactive liquid vastes was brought
into experimental operation. The materials produced occupy only a
tenth of the storage space needed for the original volume.
